The Friday Face-Off was originally created by Books by Proxy:
each Friday, bloggers showcase book covers on a weekly theme.

This week, the theme is “White covers”
As I read a lot of French books I encounter many white covers, as often French books don’t really have illustrated covers.
But it’s hard sometimes to find other editions and compare covers.
So I went with a delightful Japanese novel: A Cat, A Man, and Two Women, an awesome classic, and short too – great to introduce you to a famous Japanese author.

WHICH COVER IS YOUR FAVORITE? WHY?
This was a fun exercise.
I read the book in its white cover the one listed first here. No other cover is white, but we do find a couple of white cats.
I’m amazed at actually all the various colors used for this book, with startling colors in #4, or a gorgeous landscape in #5.
I think my favorite is actually #8 (Romanian edition), with the focus on the cat’s eye, where you can guess that this cat is quite foxy! Fits perfectly with the story.
Have you read this book?
WHICH COVER IS YOUR FAVORITE? WHY?
Next Friday: a scifi written on or before 1975
I think I like the first one best. It’s clean and simple. The paint that conveys the image of a cat is minimalistic but clearly a cat. It almost looks like an accident, like a picture formed from spilled coffee. When I first looked at it I wondered if the head of a man or woman might also be found in the stain.

OMG, I never thought of that, well seen!

TheTanazaki black and white cover is more striking. i think I see a mouse in the black markings, lol.

Funny how different viewers see different things. It’s definitely a cat and mouse book, though the identity of the mouse is more complex than at first sight

I like quite a few of these, I love the close up of the cat face. I also like the very dramatic red cover with the white out spillage? But my favourite is the first. It’s so simple, it grabs the eye and makes you want to know more. That being said the closer I look at some of the others the more intrigued I am.

Thanks for stopping by! Yes, the simplicity of the first is quite Japanese. Tammy liked also the Turkish edition (white spillage). Definitely a great book to try anyway

So many different covers – how interesting. I like the cat eye on #8 but I think I like #10 best with the cat, the faces of two women, and the face of the man.
