Year of reading 2021
Part 1
My top 18
To follow my tradition, here is part 1 of my yearly recap.
There is a total of 3 parts:
- my favorites, with my usual categories, see here below
- my stats
- my fun list with titles
Last year, I wrote that 2020 was my best year of reading ever, with a total of 123 books. Well, this record totally exploded with 165 books read/listened to in 2021!
Not too sure what happened. We may find some elements of answers with my stats post on Wednesday.
The final choice here below is based on the quality of the book, on how it resonated with me and my own experience, and on how it stayed with me. Some of these books may actually have got only 4 out 5 Eiffel Towers at the time I read them.
And choosing from 163 books was not an easy exercise!

Out of the 18, my favorite is A Single Rose.
I notice that 6 are in French (33%), and Michel Bussi manages to win in two categories!

18 is a very good number! I have Lost Spells and Apothecary Diaries on my TBR from your earlier reviews. But I confess I am liking the idea of Beatryce Prophecy a whole lot more! 🙂

well, 3 very different genres for sure. I only enjoyed book 1 of the Apothecary Diaries manga. Vol.2 was disappointing and going into a direction I didn’t like

I’ve not read any of these but I enjoyed Muriel Barbery’s last book. Will have to check out Rose since you rate it so highly. Thanks for sharing all your faves and stats, it’s always fun to see what each blogger picks.

Thanks!
So you are talking about The Writer’s Cats, right?
LikeLike
No, I read The Life of Elves … looks like that was her last full novel, right? The Writer’s Cats looks adorable but I haven’t read it.

Sorry, I was looking at French dates. La Vie des elfes was published in 2015. I was hesitating reading this one. No I will. It has a sequel, or vol 2 of the series: A Strange Country

The language was very atmospheric and poetic, even in translation (by Alison Anderson). Looking back at my review, I described it as “one of those rare books I can enjoy without always entirely understanding what is going on.” I was left with impressions rather than firm memories, but I do think you might enjoy it too.

“very atmospheric and poetic” applies here too, though here everything is clear. I read it in French, but the translation in English is also by Alison, so should be good!

Congratulations on a record-breaking year!
Did I see The Little Wooden Robot here first? I can’t remember. It looks so cute! I’ve been meaning to write a post that breaks down my favorites of 2021 a bit farther but haven’t made time for it yet.

The Little Wooden Robot is so beautiful, illustrations and content. A modern fairy tale. Fabulous.
Looking forward to your favorites in stats

Gosh, I haven’t read any of these – though I do have Klara and the Sun because my book group is reading it later this year.

Don’t worry, I trend to read books that no one else around reads, lol.
Though you like classics, so I highly recommend Midaq Alley. And Rider on the Rain, two different genres, but so good

I bought a copy of Klara and the Sun when it came out and still haven’t read it! Really must get round to it soon.
