Top Ten Books Book
Titles with French Numbers In Them
TTT for September 14, 2021
#TopTenTuesday
🌼🌼🌼
Fun! I suggested this theme for #TopTenTuesday on October 1st, 2019, and I realize it’s back!
So to avoid featuring some of the same books, I’m going to do what I did two years ago (picking numbers 1-10), but in French this time!
I’m listing books that I have read, and that you probably not have heard about, for the most part.
Please click on the covers to access my reviews in English
I added the English cover when I know the book is available in English
UN
DEUX
TROIS
QUATRE
CINQ
SIX
I haven’t read this one yet, it’s on my TBR
SEPT
HUIT
NEUF
Neuf can mean 9, but also new!
DIX
I haven’t read this one yet either, on my TBR
Have you read any of these?
Show me your list!
This is the first French response I’ve seen to this week’s prompt. Very cool.

I don’t know any of these – The French version of numero huit loooks very scary!

It’s actually a classic Japanese mystery published in 1949. Will be available in English translation on December 2nd 2021, by Pushkin Vertigo. Not sure why, but lots of Japanese novels are available earlier in French than in English. And much earlier for this one, as it was translated into French in 1999!!

You are right, I have not read (or heard) of any of these! Thanks for keeping it interesting. Have a great week!

Thanks Cindy. I highly recommend the one by Pierre Lemaitre

I’ll be in France in a few weeks, so thanks for the French lesson! I don’t know the language at all beyond “bonjour” and “merci.” Good thing my BIL, who’s our tour guide, is fluent.
Happy TTT!

The Sixth Extinction looks interesting. Three Days and a Life as well- will need to look closer but I like that French language cover, looks moody and mysterious 🙂

It’s interesting that this is such a pattern in thrillers! Great twist on the prompt.

Well, I do read a lot of thrillers in French!

I’m not surprised to see how many (or how few) of those books are translated into English, I find that all the time with my German books.
I had to chuckle about your “Neuf” book. Funny idea!
My TTT.

There are probably even less German books translated, so sad

Well, there are a lot of German books written, so obviously, they are not all translated. But I often notice in the various international book clubs that I’ve been in that popular foreign books are much more often translated into German than into English. And faster.

I know, very sad

It’s sad for those who only can read English (so a lot of people) that so few books are translated into English. The smaller the country, the more translations seem to be into the language but the fewer out of it. I have seen books in German, Dutch, French, even Finnish or other small countries whose books were translated into dozens of other languages but not English.

I agree, though there’s a slow movement trying to work hard at that problem

I think blogging helps getting more people interested. I know you and I contribute to that movement.

I haven’t read any of those but here are a few titles that I have read, avec des chiffres. Il était une fois en France, BD. Une si longue lettre, Marianna Bâ. Je suis numéro quatre, Pittacus Lore. Demain j’aurai vingt ans, Alain Mabanckou. Fun exercise. 🙂

Thanks! Haven’t read yet any by Mabanckou!

Very clever ! I especially liked your imaginative use of Pont Neuf….
I’ve read exactly one of these – Three Days and A Life

Yeah, I took some freedom there, lol. I’m glad you have read Three Days and a Life. I thought it was so well written. Well Lemaitre won le prix Goncourt (for another book), so that makes sense

I did enjoy it more than I expected – I had read Alex by him previously which was so completely different

Yes, this is very different indeed

Good choices. Can’t say I have read or heard about any of them. I had a quick look on the books I have read this year and found two with numbers in them. The Seven Sisters by Lucinda Riley and eleven minutes by Paulo Coelho.

Thanks for sharing. Lucinda Riley was a great author
