For this Classics spin #24, I got #18, which on my list was
Wow, got a fat one, 656 pages! I really have no idea what I’m getting into, lol. Happy with the challenge, plus I haven’t read an Austrian classic for a long time.
It has been on my TBR for 7 years, so it’s about time.
So I have to read it before the end of September.
“With his epic trilogy, The Sleepwalkers (published in 1932), Hermann Broch (1886-1951, born in Austria) established himself as one of the great innovators of modern literature, a visionary writer-philosopher the equal of James Joyce, Thomas Mann, or Robert Musil. Even as he grounded his narratives in the intimate daily life of Germany, Broch was identifying the oceanic changes that would shortly sweep that life into the abyss.
Whether he is writing about a neurotic army officer The Romantic, a disgruntled bookkeeper and would-be assassin The Anarchist, or an opportunistic war-deserter The Realist, Broch immerses himself in the twists of his characters psyches, and at the same time soars above them, to produce a prophetic portrait of a world tormented by its loss of faith, morals, and reason.”
Have you read it? What did you think?
It’s never too late to challenge yourself to (re)discover the classics and connect and have fun with other Classics lovers. See here what this is all about.

No, I haven’t… I don’t know the author at all, to be honest.

Oh oh, you are so well read, I hope it’s not a bad sign!!

No, I’m not well read at all! I never even finished my BA.

A degree does not necessarily mean anything here. You have read from many authors, and I have discovered some through you. I really appreciate your input, that’s why I follow your blog. The fact that I may have more degrees than you is irrelevant to me in this respect.

That is a hefty tome by today’s standards. I hope it is engaging! Mine is Imperial Women by Pearl S. Buck–almost as large. We’ll see if I get it done on time. Your classics list was amazing–I took notes!

I have another book by her, but not this one. That’s the nice thing with this feature, we get to discover so many classics. Glad my list also inspired you

Yikes, that’s a long one. I’ve never heard of it before but I have read Mann’s The Magic Mountain. I wish you luck and enjoyment with this one!

Ah yes, The Magic Mountain was awesome. Which makes me think, I should reread it, that was 3 decades ago!

Sounds interesting, have to check him up. I am not familiar with him. However, I want to read more Austrian authors since my husband is Austrian. Always a good way to get into the culture. Good luck with your read. I got Dante’s Divine Comedy. I have read the first book, and I am now on the second, which I intended for the spin.

Ah I really loved a lot The Divine Comedy, the whole of it.
Besides Rilke and Freud, I haven’t read much of Austrian authors either, I’m afraid. I really want to try Zweig, also on my Classics list

I don’t often hear about him. Can’t remember how it ended up my list! I’m stuck with books I have to read for review, so won’t make it, but plan to read it asap
