Expanding Blogging Horizons

What do you think about when you think about going beyond blogging or expanding your horizons? Is it a redesign of your blog? Have you branched out into freelance writing or even published a novel of your very own? Or, have you moved into a different venue like podcasts or vlogging? This is the day to tell us about how you have expanded on blogging in your own unique way.

So far, I have basically kept at writing reviews for my own blog. I have tried for a few weeks on another blog, but could not keep the pace, plus it really didn’t bring me more traffic.
Lots of things I plan to do:

  • yes, I would like to redesign my blog, as the template is no longer available anyway on But I want a 3 columns and free. I have not yet found something that really grabbed me. Any recommendation??
  • I have already published a book:

Light to Enlighten My Darkness

  • but I’m thinking of maybe doing an ebook from my blog posts on a common theme – recent French literature? Any suggestion?
  • I have also recently published a novel in translation, waiting for a few details to tell you all about it!
  • the big thing I really want to try is vlogging. I think it would be a good format for my monthly wrap-up. What do you think? Do you take time to watch short videos by bloggers you follow, or do you prefer the written format?

Now it is time to give a little love to those little stories in your life. Share your love for your favorite shorts of any form. What is a short story or novella that doesn’t get the attention that it deserves? Recommend to readers what shorts you would recommend they start with. How about listing some short story anthologies based upon genres or authors?

I have not read short stories for ages, so I’m passing on this one.

  1. I don’t watch v.logs mainly because my first experience was not a good one – maybe there really are some around which are good quality but those I saw were excruciatingly bad. So I’m not well equipped to know if this is a good idea.

Your book idea on French literature sounds a good one – you have so much knowledge to share. Let us know when you;re ready to publish!

    • I have mostly seen YA vlogs, and I am close to 50…. But I think it could be good if well done – and I like challenges.
Thanks for your encouragement for publishing! = great cheerleading!!

  2. I like the sound of all of these – well done you for being so active and proactive!
Although I have to admit I don’t usually watch a lot of vlogs unless it’s an interview with a famous author or a group discussion. I find it easier to read (and find the most relevant bits).

  3. In terms of trying new things … I’m dipping into Goodreads to see how it works and what aspects I might enjoy. I’m also going to attend my first Historical Novel Society conference, a chance to immerse myself in the community and meet some of the people I only know on social media or by reading their books. Regarding v-logging (which tools autocorrect to flogging!!), I prefer reading as I find that venue easier to absorb and easier to scan!

    • Goodreads is amazing. You could connect there with great historical fiction Groups too. Have fun with the Historical Novel Society. As we say in France, I would love to be a little mouse and go there, meaning not to be seen, but to hear everything! Funny for the f/vlogging. It would not replace my reading, it is the fact of using videos in your blog, so for instance instead of writing a review, you present it in a video. I like writing reviews, so instead, I might use it for my recap, I think to present my favorite books of the month would be a good way for me.

  4. I’ve never used a three-column template for WP so I can’t really suggest a good theme to use–best of luck looking for one!

I admit, I don’t usually watch vlogs unless it’s from a blogger I frequent–and even then, it takes me ages to get around to watching the videos *blushes* (I’m just really slow when it comes to watching videos, I prefer reading the entries, lol) But the format is becoming popular, I can see why it would appear to bloggers 🙂

I’ve got some short story/novella suggestions on my Day 3 entry if you’re looking for recommendations 🙂

  5. Congratulations on your book! I had no idea – that’s wonderful. I really want to write, but something keeps me from doing it. Fear? Laziness? Maybe both. I always feel, I don’t know, not creative enough – and certainly not disciplined enough. Plus, you know, I have so much else going on, it’s hard for me to justify spending the time on writing when I don’t know if it will get me anywhere.

And, oh, you must return to short fiction! I posted a lot of my favorites today – classics, of course. I might have to host some kind of short fiction event, soon, as I fear so many people have missed these incredible works, because so few of us bother with short fiction (Why? Because we want to cross-off the big titles from our lists?).

I’m really in need of a blog makeover, but I don’t have the know-how. I’ve hired designers twice, and one of those times went really well. I haven’t found anyone willing to give me a full makeover, yet, though.

    • my book is an anthology, so I mostly wrote the intro! but that’s a beginning. Yes, the prospect of writing a book is daunting… And yes, you have so much on your plate already! Could be a short ebook based on some of the classes you teach?
Short fiction: just signed up to a weekly mailing list to get a short story every Thursday, lots of classics looks like. found it through another ArmchairBEA post today:
good luck to find the perfect designer for your needs, it’s tough to find

  6. I made an anthology of some of my blog posts mixed with poetry. It’s an eclectic mixture and I think if I had to do it all over I would have made two books instead of one. One for the historical essays and the other full of my poems. Maybe added some of my photographs to the poetry book? I don’t know.

  7. I have a three-column WordPress theme (Platform, it’s called), but in ABEA discussion of blog design, someone said 3-columns are too cluttered, so I’m looking at it with fresh eyes!

    • you are self-hosting. still using, so limiting for me. thinking of self-hosting, maybe. when the 2 smaller columns are on the left and right side of the main body, yes that makes it hard for me to read, that’s why I chose to have my 2 smaller columns on the same side, on the right. I try to put on the far right side only things to connect or former stuff. with current things in the first column
