BOOKS ON FRANCE
READING CHALLENGE
Jan 1- Dec 31, 2014
As many of you joined this Challenge in 2013, I decided to organize it again in 2014.
I added a 5 levels this year, to have a middle level between 12 and 52 books:
WHAT TOPIC?
Any book related to France:
- it can be set in France,
- written by a French author,
- written in French (not Canadian French), by authors from any country
- about a French theme: French cuisine (how the French influenced American cuisine is accepted for instance), French fashion, etc.
- it can be a book you read also for another challenge
You can contact me if you are looking for titles.
You can find great ideas here:
Here is my own list for 2014
Here is my list for 2013.
Books read by bloggers who did this challenge in 2013
You can find also great titles on France Book Tours – all the books there fit this challenge!
If you are a Goodreads member, you can access my France shelf.
WHAT GENRE?
All the genres are accepted:
- nonfiction
- fiction
- historical fiction
- mystery, etc
WHAT MEDIA?
All medias are accepted:
- paper
- graphic (novel or non-fiction)
- ebook
- audiobook
HOW MANY BOOKS?
- LEVEL 1, “un peu” = 3 books (one per quarter for instance)
- LEVEL 2, “beaucoup”= 6 books
- LEVEL 3, “passionnément” = 12 books (one/month, for instance)
- LEVEL 4, “doublement passionément” = 24 books (two books/month, for instance)
- LEVEL 5, “à la folie”= 52 books (one/week, for instance)
Just an explanation on the 5 levels:
In France, we have a silly funny game:
when girls tell fortunes by pulling the petals off daisies, they say for instance, il m’aime un peu, beaucoup, passionnément, à la folie. What comes up on the last petal is supposed to reveal to what degree the boyfriend loves a girl: a bit, a lot, passionately, or he is maddeningly in love with her!
NB: the level 4 name is not part of that game, I added it for the sake of this challenge.
AND THERE WILL BE A GIVEAWAY
AT THE END OF 2014:

I think I will try the easy one. There is a few good challenges going on next year so if I do easy I can do a few, some books might do more than one challenge. I have not read many books based in France, I have always wanted to go there. Looking foward to this.

Oh I’m so thrilled that you’re continuing the Books on France challenge Emma. Not that reading books on France is any particular challenge of course! I do love sharing my books with others and seeing what other participants are reading too. There are always more books on France to find. I’m looking forward to it. I’ll try and get to doing a challenge post soon, but I have to do my 2013 wrap up post first….

looking forward to have you on board in 2014 and see what you will read. Yes, there are so many books, even just in English, set in France actually, quite trendy

Welcome Richard, i feel very honored you would do this challenge. I assume you are going to read the books in French, right?

Thanks, that’s super kind of you to say, Emma, but I’m actually honored just to receive such a warm welcome from you! Anyway, looking forward to participating in the challenge this year. I’ll be reading most of my books in French, yes, but I’ll likely make an exception for Proust and/or Rabelais if I get around to them + there’s a book or two on French history written by non-French authors that I might read for the event.
LikeLike
looking forward to your list. You should try Du côté de chez Swann in French. it’s not that difficult, especially for Hispanophones. Actually Rabelais is more difficult, because of the meaning of very old words

Thanks, finally signed up. I’ve been stuck on The Guermantes Way for a while, but I’ll look at giving Marcel a try in French when I move on. Cheers!

thanks for joining, I just commented on your post. I also dragged my feet through le côté de Guermantes. Sodome et Gomorrhe is a bit less boring

I like this idea, but what do you have against Canadian French?
LikeLike
Thanks for stopping by Elizabeth. I don’t have anything against it, it’s just that’s it’s different, within a different culture, and my niche for Words And Peace and France Book Tours is France and French authors. In the blogging and marketing world, it’s better to stick to a niche, this one works well for me. And if it encourages other bloggers to organize a challenge for Canadian authors, the better!

What a great challenge and glad I found it. I’m definitely a lover of all things French so won’t be hard for me to choose books on this great country. I am going to limit myself to just the “beaucoup” level though as I’m *trying* to read books from other countries and cities besides France and Paris this year. 🙂

welcome Stacey! I saw you are reading Paris My Sweet, I enjoyed it very much. as you like historical fiction and memoirs, you might want to review books for France Book Tors, that I run. we often have histfic or memoirs, and they are set in France. see here for more details: http://francebooktours.com/be-a-tour-host/

Thanks for the welcome 🙂
I definitely like both of those genres and read them often. I read up about the France Book Tours and it sounds really neat. I am going to tuck that idea away for a little later and I think you’ll be hearing back from me about it after I get my blog a little further along and can spend more time reading than blogging. 🙂

sounds like a great plan! it’s good to try to keep a balance between books you get for review and books you already have on your shelves, waiting to be read. Unfortunately, this is a piece of advice I don’t follow myself, lol
LikeLike
Oh for sure it’s good to try and keep that balance. Afraid I’m not very good at it myself either 🙂
Also wanted to give an update as I’ve separated the books from the travel part of my blog so my link to the challenge post has changed. Not sure how to edit it in the Mr Linky so will share with you here. Also finished my first book review (linked to in the appropriate Mr Linky). Yay! One book finished towards my goal.

congratulations! I think I should be able to edit your Mr Linky. putting it on my to do list
