The Weekly Photo Challenge is:
Share a photo that means GEOMETRY to you!
This is what I consider one of my best pictures taken in France last Spring (zoom on it, it’s nicer bigger.)
It’s the picture of a German cemetery in the Champagne region. German cemeteries there have black crosses. The American ones have white crosses.
HAVE YOU RECENTLY TAKEN A PICTURE
THAT EXPRESSES WHAT GEOMETRY MEANS TO YOU?

I know, your is more uplifting. But you can’t erase war from the French landscape, that’s unfortunately part of the geography of the land.

What a beautiful shot, although cemeteries (especially military) always make me a little sad.

Thanks! I know, very sad.

The lines in the photo are stunning. The sheer loss of life represented by the crosses gives pause to think about the past.

These places remind us why we should do everything we can to avoid war! I knew the Allied cemeteries with their white crosses were scattered around the French landscape, but I have never seen any pics of the black crosses of the German cemeteries before. Says a lot about the feelings left over from that terrible time.

Wow, that certainly is a very striking image, I can see why you were pleased with the photo. I’ve visited some of the American cemeteries in Normandy so knew that they had white crosses (or stars). I don’t believe I’ve ever seen a German cemetery before, it’s perhaps even more sombre than the white.

Bonjour! How have I not found you before? I love France too … especially the Cote D’Azur. My next novel is set there and every Friday I post about France with photos. I’m looking forward to following you!

Isn’t it interesting that there can be an incredibly beauty in sadness?

Very interesting thought that makes me reflect on this picture: at what level do I find it beautiful? I have to say only if I consider the scene on the aesthetic level: the contrast of black and green, the vertical axis with the tress and crosses, the position and perspective of the crosses. In real life, when I saw it, I was struck by the vastness of the place. did I find it as beautiful then as I do now when I look at my picture? No, I didn’t, I remember feeling the heaviness of the sadness of the place. Actually I don’t think I saw it as beautiful then, because I was too much filled with what it meant.

No question there is much sadness in loss and death. Our own military cemetaries are very similar… Very sad in the loss of life, though it’s often felt that those who died in combat passed away for a “worthy cause”. Aesthetically, all those little white crosses with the manicured land and flowers everywhere can also be beautiful…and somewhat comforting. Still, always wrapped in sorrow. That heaviness never quite goes away…
