Sound Effects in Audiobooks – Audiobook Week Discussion

Jen at Devourer of Books, who organizes this Audiobook week, asks this question for today:

“Sound effects in audiobooks are a divisive topic.

There are audiobooks I have really adored that good friends have nearly dropped audiobooks, had them almost ruined by the addition of sound effects. Where do you come down on this issue?”

Most of the audiobooks I have listened to this year did not have sound effects. Only Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk  had some, and honestly, they really did not add anything to the text, maybe come to think about it, they made it even worse!

On the road, I listen sometimes to Bookradio, on Sirius-XM, and the excerpts have audio effects more often than not; if there are just a few, fine, especially if they help to understand the story, but if it’s overdone, I really hate it, and switch to another radio!

So I definitely prefer audiobooks WITHOUT sound effects.

WHAT’S YOUR PREFERENCE?

    • You can access Bookradio if you have satellite radio in your car. with Sirius-XM radio, it’s channel 80 – a lot of excerpts come from audible.com. Thanks for your comment

  1. Hmmm…I was wondering about Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk. I’ve listened to all of Sedaris’ other books, but I’ve been hesitant about this latest. I heard him read some of the passages when he was here last year, and I just wasn’t that into it. Based on your review, I think I’ll just skip it! Too bad…I’ve loved the rest of Sedaris’ audio books.
