Audiobook Resources – Audiobook Week Discussion

Alas, already last day of Audiobook Week!

Today Jen @ Devourer of Books, who hosts this great Audiobook week, asks the following question:

What are your best audiobook resources?

My answer is probably not too conventional. I always try to have one audiobook going on; to do so, I just look at my awfully long TBR list, and see if any of the titles I want to read soon in available in the audiobook database of my public library for downloadables. My library gives access both to OverDrive and Netlibrary, so there are A LOT of books there. Now, with the success of devices to listen to downloadables, it is getting a bit more difficult to get a book right away, you often need to put a hold on the book you want, and then you receive an email when it’s available, so you have to get a bit more organized.

For instance, as soon as I started listening to Cutting For Stone, (and YES I just finished it yesterday and should be able to post my review today!), I looked for the next one; and I downloaded it when it became available – incidentally, that’s Bel Canto, by Ann Patchett, yes who just published her brand new book this week, I know I know, I always take the late train, but I’ll get to A State of Wonder eventually. And so today, I’ll also go and fish for the audiobook I’ll listen after that.

How do I add good titles to my TBR?

  • Mostly by reading other book bloggers, I follow about 40 of them at least, by reading the New York Review of Books – do you know you can subscribe to only this part of the newspaper, and have also access to it online? you can probably find it as well in your public library.
  • I suggest you also go to Teresa’s Reading Corner, where she organizes the 2011 Audio Book Challenge; there you will find titles reviewed by tons of bloggers
  • on your ipod, you can as well subscribe to book podcasts
  • and of course, just click on my category Audiobooks in the left menu here, and you’ll read about great audiobooks I listened to recently.

  1. I use the library to borrow audios – and listen to the cds in my car…I really need to try OverDrive and get some onto my ipod.

    • Yes the downloadable service offered by libraries through overdrive is great; just be aware though that for most titles, you still need to go through computer before transferring titles to your ipod, though they have been advertising for several months that you can do it directly from your ipod – not true for many titles. Thanks for your comment. Emma

  2. I often use Overdrive and NetLibrary too. It must becoming very popular now as I have had to wait for a title.

    • yes, as I explained in my post, you have to get organized to be sure you always have one audiobook available, because now you almost always need to put on hold, and it’s going to get worse later this year when people can download from library audiobooks to their kindle! Thanks for your comment. Emma
